The best picture for anyone who comes for the first time in Corfu is from the ship which, as if deliberately, comes in a slow pace to give you the opportunity to take a good look of the great medie
Early Christian Basilica of Solinas
Across the road from the big night clubs and bars of Kallithea (just off the village), there is a sign directing to the early Christian Basilica of Solinas. A dirt-road leads to the sea where you can see covered parts (excavations are still on) of the church and a wonderful mosaic floor.
The region of Kallithea is directly associated with the temple of Ammon Zeus, one of the most important worship sites of Zeus in Greece.
On the descent from the main road to Kryopigi beach, the winding road is lost hidden in huge pines until it finally reaches the wonderful beach with the fine sand.
The village was named after Cassandros, ruler of Macedonia. It was a major commercial centre, until its total destruction in 539 AD from the Huns who managed to invade the renowned walls of the town.
The church of Agios Dimitrios, built in 1858, is a domed basilica.
