Lefkada (Prefecture)

Joined by a umbilical cord to the mainland, the place which raised poets and artists exudes a cosy inland atmosphere as well as cosmopolitan island flavours, and boasts some of the nicest beaches in Greece. It all started in the 60's, when Onassis discovered the island and bought Skorpios, a small island opposite Nydri, on the south-eastern coast. The east side, which developed first, has a shallow and calm sea, ideal for family outings, and views of the islands of Lefkada. The west side, on the other hand, is full of unique beaches of wild beauty, where white cliffs frame the vivid turquoise, the phosphorescent waters and white sand. Lefkada, however, is not just beaches. It is also villages of the hinterland with threshing floors from the cultivation of vines and lentils still marking the land and trails through lush landscapes with waterfalls, gorges and ruined monasteries.
