According to many, the church of Panagia Paraportiani is the pride of Mykonos. It is also one of the most impressive monuments of the Aegean and a rare example of popular church architecture. The church is actually a two-storey complex consisting of five churches. Its name literally means "Our Lady of the Postern Gate" in Greek, as its entrance was found in the side gate of the entrance of the medieval castle of Chora. The construction had started between the 16th and 17th century and completed over the years through successive works of anonymous artists which ended up in this marvelous construction of asymmetric volumes, blending harmoniously into the landscape. Four out of the five churches of the complex are located on the ground floor. The fifth-and the homonymous one- is set just above them.
